Winning project of the public notice Le Due Bari funded by MIC and the Municipality of Bari, year 2022
The project ‘Dance… dream on the shores of the sea’ is a journey through the cultures of the world in the embrace of the city of Bari. The Mediterranean Sea has always been a crossroads of cultures, influenced by countless invasions and migrations: we could probably lose ourselves if we dwelled on how abundant its artistic heritage can be, as it is the cradle of ancient peoples. Each country has been influenced in ways that vary considerably from area to area. It is important to note, therefore, how the Mediterranean Sea still offers artists continuous inspiration for their works, interpreting their sense of belonging in a contemporary and innovative way.
The project, from its workshops to its performances, aims to look at the Mediterranean, along whose shores numerous civilisations have arisen, leaving us an extraordinary legacy and forming the very foundations on which our culture is built.
One final note: the choice of locations. Places that were once the heart of violence, organised crime, scenes of murder and bloodshed. Places confiscated from the Mafia, Artemisia and Amaranta (Santo Spirito and San Giorgio) used exclusively for this project, places named after victims of the Mafia, Giardini Mizzi (Loseto), Giardino Peppino Impastato (Catino), Parco della Legalità (San Paolo). We have chosen to bring beauty to places where only violence was known, to work synergistically with those areas at risk to bring art, culture and entertainment and to raise awareness among the local community and third sector operators to come together to revive these spaces in light of the changes taking place in our city, starting from Mungivacca, in Municipality 2, where the Breathing Art Company has been operating for years. This journey will be accompanied by Libera, a national association active in the prevention of mafia phenomena.
On stage: four days of performances in the Catino, Mungivacca, San Paolo and Loseto neighbourhoods, with a tribute to the Mediterranean Sea featuring the participation of the professional companies Breathing Art Company (Italy), Konstantina Skalionta (Cyprus) and
Coljam Company (Morocco), and the involvement of the local community with the dance training centres Ballet Project, Unika, Liberdanza and The Studio. The three days will feature exclusive workshops for young dancers from the area with international artists.
