William's women
2016 - 2017 - 2018
“William’s Women” is a new production by The Breathing Art Company. It is focused on the role of the female characters in the works of Shakespeare and its reflection in today’s society.
Despite their differences, all of Shakespeare’s women are connected by a common issue – the consequences of the love choices that they have made. Juliet, Ophelia, Lady Macbeth and Desdemona– all of them went too far in the name of love. The question is, was it worth it?
In her new piece, Simona De Tullio explores the excess of love that each of these characters went through. When does love become destructive? When does a character lose their sense of reality? When do all these women realize that they are the victim of themselves, of their own choices? And once they have discovered this, why do they suffer through it again and again?
Following the thread of these women’s lives, one can clearly see that each of them, Juliet, Ophelia, Lady Macbeth and Desdemona were victims of violence and abuse. While the issue may seem fictive, 35 per cent of women worldwide do experience physical or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime. Daily, thousands of women are suffering physical and mental domestic abuse yet a high percentage of such cases remain unreported. It is the reality of the 21st century. Women of today have not moved far from the women of Shakespeare. They are still judged by her love choices, subjected to physical and mental abuse and are not shown justice in challenging situations.
